The law on re-election when a Speaker of parliament dies needs to be amended for the sake of humanity and mourning.
Greetings fellow Ugandans.
I treasure this day 22-3-2022 to pen an opinion about the wave of events unfolding in the country, particularly concerning the death of speaker of parliament Rt Hon Jacob Oulanyah that was announced on Sunday 20-3-2022 11am by President Museveni through the internet.
One day after he was declared dead, people have warmed themselves to take over the position he was occupying in government, claiming it is required by the law.
Yes of course, the law might require so but how will the relatives and friends of the dead feel when they see people contesting to take the position of their deceased, more over in a situation where the body is still not yet buried!
By doing so, it brings more tears in the eyes of relatives and friends of the deceased.
Such things have no difference with people fighting over the inheritance of the orphans.
The law should be amended to give space for mourning the dead, alternatively by enabling Deputy Speaker to automatically become the Speaker.
