HOW CAN YOU STOP BEING A SURETY FOR SOMEONE ELSE?.

📸: Istock Jonna was caught fighting in a bar and the police told him that he was going to be in prison while his case was ongoing. He pleaded with Abby his brother to help him get out of prison. So, the following day when Jonna was brought before a magistrate, he asked to be released and even promised court that his brother Abby would keep him out of trouble. Its been two weeks and Jonna now bullies Abby and tells him not to remind him about court things.     Abby has realized that he cannot advise or look after Jonna and wants to stop being his surety. How can he do it?    WHAT DOES THE LAW SAY?   When an accused person is released from prison on condition that he/she returns to court for their hearing, it is called bail. One of the conditions is that this person brings people who can guarantee that he returns to court for their trial and that they ‘stay out of trouble’. These people are called sureties. In this case, Abby is a surety for Jonna.    A surety is a person th

Why Spies Need To Think Low Tech To Communicate Securely Online.

Copied from this link here. Over the past year details have emerged about the spectacular and deadly implosion from 2009-2013 of the CIA’s covert communications system used to communicate with intelligence assets across the world. According to public reporting, the agency had used contractors to create a series of innocuous-seeming websites through which its in-country assets could communicate with their handlers but utilized similar coding and technical elements that enabled Iranian intelligence to simply Google for the complete list of sites and rapidly uncover their interconnections and links back to the CIA itself. What can we learn from this incident about our online security and privacy and what lessons might it teach us about the need to return to the previous era’s view that there is no such thing as truly secure communication? Moreover, what might those lessons offer us in terms of advice for the rest of society? The collapse of the CIA’s web-

WHAT DO YOU DO IF THE PERSON YOU REPORTED IS RELEASED BY COURT?.

By #BarefootLawyers  Nakalembe has endured a lot from Johnny, her neighbour. Whenever one of her matooke gets ready for harvesting he comes for it the night before she can harvest it. This time round, she caught him red-handed in her bedroom holding her handbag. He pushed her out of the way and ran away with her bag.   On Friday last week, he was arrested by the Police and Nakalembe was told that he would be in court on Monday morning. So, she was very shocked when she found him playing ‘ludo’ on Monday night. She ran back to the Police, but she was informed that Johnny had received bail. Nakalembe is worried that she has already lost the case and wonders if she will be able to get back her money since Johhny is out on bail.  WHAT DOES THE LAW SAY?  When someone is arrested for committing a crime, they are known as a suspect. This is because anyone who is accused of committing a criminal offence is presumed (taken) to be innocent.  The law says that any person who has been

DID YOU KNOW THAT YOU MAY BE REQUIRED TO TAKE AN HIV TEST?.

By law, there are certain people who must undergo regular HIV testing to prevent the transmission of HIV. This includes:   (a) Victims of sexual offences (b) Pregnant women (c) Partners of pregnant women   In addition to these, any person arrested for a sexual offence, must also undergo HIV testing so that the results can form part of the criminal proceedings and investigations. This is because any sexual offence becomes more serious if the accused person is HIV positive. 📷: Unsplash
