The International day of the African child has been celebrated on June 16 every year since 1991, when it was first introduced by the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). The purpose of this day is to honour those who participated in the Soweto Uprising on June 16th, 1976. It also serves as a reminder to keep raising awareness for the improvement of education provided to African children. As we celebrate this day, let us remember to reflect on our rights and duties as citizens towards children. The Ugandan Constitution states that all children have the right to be cared for, protected, and maintained but also, they all have the right to education. During yesterday’s school assembly, the Headmistress of St. Catherine Catholic School, a traditional catholic school, announced that everyone was going to take part in the remembrance of the death and suffering of Christ during Easter. She called it the Way of the Cross, and attendance was compulsory. The dormitories, toilets, sickbay and classrooms would be locked so there would be no dodgers. Farook went to the Headmistress after the assembly and told her that he is a Muslim, so he does not see why he should practice Christian things. Instead, the Headmistress threatened to either expel him or cane him until there are holes in his trousers. Is this legal? WHAT DOES THE LAW SAY?
