Selective Salary Increament; Science Teachers Have Bagged Home Shs 4.2 million, as Their Counterparts, Arts Teachers Bagged Shs 1.2 million with Tears.

Teachers of Arts subjects in secondary schools have described the new salary structure where the remunerations of their science colleagues has been doubled as an “injustice” that could cripple the quality of education.  Science teachers will now be earning nearly four times more than their Arts counterparts. Arts teachers under their umbrella organisation, Uganda National Teachers Union (Unatu) last month went on a three-week sit-down strike protesting the selective increase. Their efforts did not yield. President Museveni talked the Unatu members back to class, promising they would be considered at a later, but unspecified time. To class they did return but the release of the new salary structure by the Ministry of Public Service on Wednesday opened old wounds and reignited the debate on the potential consequences of selective salary enhancements. Mr Filbert Baguma, the Unatu secretary general, told this newspaper yesterday that the disparity has further demotivated the Arts teachers,

DR STELLA NYANZI; WHO MURDERED BEWATTE BETUNGURA? (A LATE NIGHT RANT) .

People have called me mad, insane, a lunatic, mentally ill and confused because I have refused to forget about the recent murder of the university student of law who was murdered in the most recent election campaigns for the guild president at Makerere University. I am being gagged by mothers of sons, fathers paying tuition fees for their children, and siblings of students; Ugandans who are all working hard to silence my questioning about the stabbing that led to Bewatte’s death. When I called out NUP’s leaders for selectively uniting with the FDC in Soroti, but abandoning Bewatte’s dead body to the point of failing to attend his burial, the gags said I am bitter for losing an election. When I questioned the absence of a single member of the NUP Institutions at Bewatte’s funeral, I was told I am bitter because my lover dumped me for a woman in the NUP. When I asked about the absence of all the NUP contestants and campaigners at the funeral, I was called a confused woman seeking attenti

ERIAS LUKWAGO; A FULL ACCOUNT OF MR. OFWONO OPONDO’S CRIME OF UTMOST SAVAGERY AT THE NBS TV FRONTLINE TALKSHOW.

Last night, I happened to be a Panelist at the NBS TV Talkshow that runs from 10:00pm to midnight. The debate was about the sham Soroti East Member of Parliament By-election. Midway the debate, hell broke loose when the Government Spokesperson, who is a regular Panelist (Frontliner) on the show, ran berserk and started throwing tantrums. Out of the blue, he sprung up, charged at me and threatened to evict me from the studios. He pushed his hand into the pocket and around his waist, in a manner that suggested he wanted to draw a pistol at me. I dared him to shoot at me. He instead pounced on my neck and attempted to strangle me. I did not fight back but instead struggled to wriggle out of his grip. He then punched me in the chest and grabbed both collars of my jacket while huffing and puffing like a cobra. The Moderator, Charles Mwangushya moved in to restrain him but to no avail. He was joined by a Co-Panelist, the Hon. Winnie Kiiza, former Leader of Opposition but the now wild Opondo

Over a Dozen Android Apps on Google Play Store Caught Dropping Banking Malware.

A malicious campaign leveraged seemingly innocuous Android dropper apps on the Google Play Store to compromise users' devices with banking malware. These 17 dropper apps, collectively dubbed  DawDropper  by Trend Micro, masqueraded as productivity and utility apps such as document scanners, QR code readers, VPN services, and call recorders, among others. All these apps in question have been removed from the app marketplace. "DawDropper uses Firebase Realtime Database, a third-party cloud service, to evade detection and dynamically obtain a payload download address," the researchers said. "It also hosts malicious payloads on GitHub." Droppers are apps designed to sneak past Google's Play Store security checks, following which they are used to download more potent and intrusive malware on a device, in this case, Octo (Coper), Hydra, Ermac, and TeaBot. Attack chains involved the DawDropper malware establishing connections with a Firebase Realtime Database to

Microsoft Uncovers Austrian Company Exploiting Windows and Adobe Zero-Day Exploits.

A cyber mercenary that "ostensibly sells general security and information analysis services to commercial customers" used several Windows and Adobe zero-day exploits in limited and highly-targeted attacks against European and Central American entities. The company, which Microsoft describes as a private-sector offensive actor (PSOA), is an Austria-based outfit called DSIRF that's linked to the development and attempted sale of a piece of cyberweapon referred to as Subzero, which can be used to hack targets' phones, computers, and internet-connected devices. "Observed victims to date include law firms, banks, and strategic consultancies in countries such as Austria, the United Kingdom, and Panama," the tech giant's cybersecurity teams said in a Wednesday report. Microsoft is tracking the actor under the moniker KNOTWEED, continuing its trend of naming PSOAs using names given to trees and shrubs. The company previously designated the name SOURGUM to Israel

Artifact of the Week: U-2 Pressure Suit and Helmet.

High-altitude pilots wear pressure suits as protection from cockpit depressurization. At altitudes above 63,000 feet without artificial air pressure, human blood and other fluids boil. U-2 planes could fly well above that range - at 70,000 feet - so pilots had to wear this S-1010 pressure suit and helmet to protect themselves. An added benefit to wearing the pressure suits is that they protect pilots from low temperatures at high altitudes; the temperature at U-2 mission altitudes is about minus 70 degrees Fahrenheit. No pressure, right? Although our museum is not open to the public, we regularly share new artifacts to give you a virtual peek inside. SpaceX Successfully Shut Down a Russiαn Electromagnetic Warfare Attαck In Ukrαine.

The Pentagon has been left in awe after SpaceX successfully shut down a Russiαn electromagnetic warfare αttαck in Ukrαine. Last month, the company acted rapidly to stifle a Russiαn effort to disconnect Ukrainians from the internet by jamming the Starlink broadband service. SpaceX founder Elon Musk promptly steered thousands of Starlink terminals to Ukrαine after an official sent him a tweet asking for help. The Pentagon was left impressed, admitting they could could take a page out of Musk’s and SpaceX’s book for future issues. During a C4ISRNET Conference this week, the United States admitted they could learn a lot from how the private sector handled such a situation. Dave Tremper, director of electronic warfare for the Office of the Secretary of Defense, said: “The next day [after the Russiαn jamming effort], Starlink had slung a line of code and fixed it. “And suddenly that [αttαck] was not effective anymore. From EW (electromagnetic warfare) technologist’s perspective, that is fa

Google Bringing the Android App Permissions Section Back to the Play Store.

Google on Thursday said it's backtracking on a recent change that removed the app permissions list from the Google Play Store for Android across both the mobile app and the web. "Privacy and transparency are core values in the Android community," the Android Developers team said in a series of tweets. "We heard your feedback that you find the app permissions section in Google Play useful, and we've decided to reinstate it. The app permissions section will be back shortly." To that end, in addition to showcasing the new Data safety section that offers users a simplified summary of an app's data collection, processing, and security practices, Google also intends to highlight all the permissions required by the app to make sense of its "ability to access specific restricted data and actions." The reinstatement comes as the internet giant moved to swap out the apps permission section with the newer Data safety labels last week ahead of the enforcem
