First, get informed. Take an interest in news, seminars, conferences and public debate and conversations on the oil sector to understand how it works and be able to tap into the opportunities. Attend trainings where possible and supplier workshops which are regularly organised by the oil companies.
Business owners are also encouraged to formalize their businesses e.g., registering a business name or a company, registering with URA (getting a TIN) etc. You may for instance, contact BarefootLaw for more information on the processes for doing this.
As indicated above, there are many opportunities reserved for Ugandans under the national content laws that ring-fence certain supplies or works for Ugandans. PAU has set up the National Suppliers’ Database (NSD) for the registration of businesses that desire to supply goods or services in the oil and gas sector. For those who want to provide goods or services to the oil sector, registration on the NSD is a must.
In addition, Ugandans can create Joint Ventures with non-Ugandan entities to participate in the more technical and specialist works, and hence promote technology transfer and development.
