Every person in Kyanamukaka knows that Kalule's hospital does not allow pregnant women to come in for antenatal without their spouses. Mama Brenda was new to the village and went there for urgent help. Nga doesn’t the nurse chase her! Mbu if she doesn’t present a man, no treatment. Is this even legal?
The Constitution of the Republic of Uganda (our supreme law) says that no person should be discriminated against based on age, sex, race or ethnicity and social or economic standing. This means that every woman should be allowed and given the same services as any other person at the health centre. If she wants to see a doctor or receive medical attention, it should be given to her as it would be given to any other person. If any health centre demands for a man or spouse to allow a person to receive medical attention, it means that health centre and its employees are discriminating against you on the basis of your social status and gender because even single people are entitled to health care by law.
If Brenda should be turned away and she gets a complication such as losing a baby or any other health complication as a result of not being attended to, she can sue that health centre for medical negligence and for discrimination contrary to the law.
