We know this is a bit of a touchy subject, but…. Has any of you noticed how these two marriages are so similar…. Both are monogamous, both need a notice to the public, both must be registered, etc . Because of this, it is possible to have both a civil and a church marriage. But… would it be worth it to have one and then go and start over with the other as well?
Instead, here is a tip. Choose one and make sure all the requirements of that One are followed.
The law gives the church powers to officiate weddings and join people in marriage following the Christian practices and beliefs. However, it also requires them to follow some requirements set by law. Such as making marriage announcements so anyone with a reason why the two shouldn’t be married can come forward and tell them church (this is called a marriage banns like the marriage notice in civil marriage) and registering the marriage with Uganda Registration Services Bureau - Registrar of Marriages (who keeps a record of who married whom).
If you choose a church marriage make sure the church has a license to wed, that you are being wed between 10am and 4pm and that the church has registered your marriage with the registrar of marriages. If you do choose to have a civil marriage, follow what is required and then go to church to be blessed by your religious leader. This way, you will have the ‘best of both worlds’.
