A marriage is a legally or formally recognized union of two people as husband and wife. In Uganda, this is specifically a union between a man and a woman). When we use the word “legally”, we mean that all the laws recognize that relationship as being marriage. There are 4 laws of Uganda that recognize different relationships as marriage.
1. The Marriages Act (Chapter 251)
2. The Customary Marriage (Registration) Act (Chapter 248)
3. Marriage and Divorce of Mohammedans Act 1906
4. Hindu Marriage and Divorce Act (Chapter 250)
These laws recognize Civil marriages, Christian Marriages, Islamic Marriages and Hindu marriages. The details of what these laws want to recognize your marriage are different, and may depend on your religion beliefs, customs and cultures, or your ethnicity. For example Islamic and Customary marriages, are polygamous marriages (meaning a husband can have more than one wife) while the civil, Hindu and Christian marriages are monogamous (between one man and woman only.
Marriage may not change you physically, but it will change how the law sees you. For example no one can force your spouse to testify against you in a criminal trial. You also cannot just sell certain pieces of property without permission (and agreement) from your spouse.
