Zawedde has been dreaming about getting married ever since she was a flower girl for her big sister. Even now, she still finds herself thinking about her perfect wedding.
Today, her boyfriend Sabula proposed to her, and she immediately told her sister who told her that their parents would never allow her to get married before she gets a ‘masters’.
Zawedde wants to know if anyone is allowed to stop her from marrying when she wants.
CAN ANYONE MARRY?
In general, the law looks at age first when determining who can get married. It is only allows those who are above 18 years to marry and start a family. If a person is below this age and they try to get married, it is called child marriage and it is a criminal offence.
However, even if you are above 18 years, the law requires that you have a sound mind (you are capable of understanding what you are doing and its relevance). Also make sure you and your partner are not already married (monogamously) to someone else.
If you fulfil these and you are not marrying a person you are related to (we call this the prohibited degrees of affinity and consanguinity), then the law is ready to celebrate your love and protect you once you are married.
