MY LANDLORD USES MY ELECTRICITY FOR WELDING AND MY WATER FOR WASHING CLOTHES.

Matayo’s landlord comes to his water tank for water every Saturday when they have clothes to wash. On different occasions, he has caught the welder connecting to his meter box, trying to work on doors and windows for the landlord. This is annoying Matayo, and he wants to know if the landlord can do whatever he wants because ‘the houses are his’

 WHAT DOES THE LAW SAY?

Every tenant is entitled to use their rented house without any sudden or abrupt interruptions from the landlord. This is called the right to quiet enjoyment. It means that a tenant has a right to demand privacy from the landlord and ask them not to touch anything the tenant has paid for.

The landlord has no right to cause any annoyance to a tenant who has paid their rent. When we talk about annoyance, we mean any act that makes either a tenant uncomfortable about the use of a house, property or rental premise.
