Court Finally Acquits Kawempe MP Ssegirinya Over Inciting Violence But He Will Remain in Jail to Answer for Murder and Terrorism Charges Stemming from Masaka Massacre.
After one year in detention, Buganda Road Chief Magistrate Gladys Kamasanyu has cleared embattled Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya over inciting violence.
In a ruling delivered on Monday, Kamasanyu ruled that the prosecution failed to prove any of the ingredients of the offence of incitement to violence.
“No reasonable court after directing its mind on the law and the evidence adduced by the prosecution can convict the accused because by the time the prosecution closed its case, it had not proved any of the ingredients of the case. I, accordingly find no prima facie case made out against the accused warranting his defence and he is discharged,” Kamasanyu ruled.
Immediately after the ruling, Ssegirinya’s mother Justine Nakajumba ululated saying, “Owekitibwa omulamuzi mukama akuwe omukisa olw’okuwa omwana wange obwenkanya literally meaning May God bless you your worship for rendering justice to my son,”
Despite his acquittal on the charge, Ssegirinya will remain in jail over charges of murder, attempted murder and terrorism stemming from the machete killings in greater Masaka region last year.
Prosecution alleged that on March 22, 2021 at Mini Price in Kampala City, Ssegirinya carried out unlawful demonstration for purposes of inciting violence.
