A classic case of concealment foiled.
A trader's consignment entered Uganda aboard a truck declared as 785 cartons of small torches weighing 16,384kgs. The scanner said otherwise.
Image analysis was done and while it confirmed the existence of cartons of torches, there was also something conspicuous tucked away in the middle.
The consignment was flagged immediately and thorough verification revealed the truth.
That conspicuous element turned out to be 400 cartons of shoes (19,200) pairs of shoes undeclared for tax with a CIF value of ($23,040) attracting taxes of up to Ugx 100M.
Concealment and false declaration are methods of import tax evasion that NII technology is out to end.
The scanner deployed at Malaba OSBP captured the image which was relayed to the NII Command Center at the URA Hq in real time and analysis was done to unearth the concealment saving millions of tax.
Just a week ago, the same importer using the same method of concealment, had attempted to bring in a consignment declared as 600 cartons of small torches.
NII technology unearthed 250 cartons of padlocks hidden among the torches, saving Ugx 16,019,842 of tax.
All major borders now have this technology in place.
