At Nakato’s new workplace, there is a rule book for everything. There was a disciplinary procedure policy, equal opportunities policy, data protection and social media policy, whistleblowing policy, absence management policy and most surprising of all was something called a ‘sexual harassment policy’. She was surprised since the company only deals with accountancy and she could not work out when the sexual harassment bit would come up and what the policy was.
WHAT IS THIS SEXUAL HARASSMENT POLICY?
A Sexual Harassment policy is a document that tells employees that sexual harassment at that workplace is unlawful. It contains the following.
1. An assurance to employees that it unlawful to be punished for filing a complaint of sexual harassment or for co-operating in an investigation of a sexual harassment complaint.
2. A description and examples of sexual harassment.
3. Consequences for those found to have committed sexual harassment.
4. The procedure for filing sexual harassment complaints and the addresses and telephone numbers of the person to whom complaints should be made.
5. Dates of when the education and training programs on sexual harassment shall be conducted.
6. Additional training for the committee on sexual harassment, supervisory and managerial employees.
By law, each employee is entitled to a copy of this policy which should be made in such a way that it is simple and understandable to all the employees in a language spoken at the workplace.
