Maracha Constituency Legislator Hon Denis Oguzu Lee Has Written to President Museveni Over Neglect of West Nile Region Tobacco Farmer’s Compensation.
Maracha County MP, Hon. Oguzu Lee, also a farmer under the West Nile Cooperative Union has written to H.E the President Museveni over unpaid dues of tobacco farmers in West Nile. The dues arose from supply of tobacco to companies licensed by government of Uganda.
Hon Oguzu’s letter follows goverments commitment to clear the farmers on behalf of the companies and several attempts to bring the plight of the West Nile's farmers to the attention of responsible ministries.
According to the MP, following payment of farmers in Bunyoro sub region, farmers in West Nile now feel abandoned.
Earlier on, before budget was approved, Hon. Oguzu Lee and Hon. Leku Joel of Terego had attempted to bring Minister responsible for trade and cooperatives to West Nile to meet with farmers hoping that the meeting would result into allocation of resources in this financial year's budget but their efforts were thwarted by what Oguzu called colleagues "who saw it as a plus" for the two MPs rather than an attempt to salvage the dire condition of the farmers many of who can now not meet the escalating cost of living, according to Oguzu.
Similar attempt to present the issue on floor of parliament have failed as the issue has mysteriously disappeared from order paper.
In a letter also copied to the Prime Minister, Minister of Finance, Planning & Economic Development as well as Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, Oguzu hopes the president will give directives to the Minister of Finance to pay the farmers through allowable supplementary expenditure which under the Public Finance Management Act 2015 as Amended can be done without requiring parliamentary approval.
Asked if he thinks his letter will deliver, Oguzu noted that securing government requires right strategy, skill and correct timing.
