UPDF soldiers have discovered a mass grave at the encampment of islamist militants, Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) at Lisulubi, south of Busunga border post along Semuliki Bridge road, in Kasindi-Beni area, east of Democratic Republic of Congo.
“We have located one mass grave of 100-150 dead terrorists so far,” said a high ranking defence official on Monday afternoon.
The discovery comes after heavy bombardment and capture of Camp Lisulubi, which officials say is the largest ADF camp in Sector III less than 10kms from Uganda’s Bundibugyo district.
Officials said the army seized guns, uniforms, solar panels, food, medicine and stores of mivumba (second hand clothes) from the camp.
Access to the battlefield remains heavily restricted for journalists to verify information from defence officials.
But reliable sources said Ugandan troops were assessing the impact of the aerial and long-range artillery shelling on camp Lisulubi and would soon share pictorial evidence of the mass grave.
This is not the first time UPDF and Congolese soldiers have unearthed mass graves in ADF-held territory.
Earlier this year, the joint forces found mass graves of at least 500 dead bodies of ADF fighters near Kambi Ya Yua.
The army estimates that over 1,500 ADF fighters have been killed since Operation Shujaa started in December 2021.
The allied forces killed 200-300 fighters at Belu III on February 8 at the beginning of the Phase II of Operation Shujaa.
Initially meant to last six months, Operation Shujaa was extended on June 1.
Both countries signed agreements to prolong their joint military operations into a third phase until the threat was “eradicated”.
