So, you are good at makeup, selling clothes and shoes, designing houses, construction or even supplying food, fruits and vegetables. Did you know that you can turn these into an online business? Are you planning to start your business? If so, there are a few important things you need to do to follow the law:
Register your business: You need to register your business as a company or a business name at the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB). This will allow your business to be a separate legal person or legally known)
Get a Tax Identification Number (TIN): You need to apply for a TIN from the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) to pay taxes on your income. Even if you are running a small business from home, you still need to be tax compliant and you can only pay taxes if through this.
WHAT IF YOU ALREADY DID THIS, OR YOUR BUSINESS IS ALREADY RUNNING?
If you run your business online already, that is good news. All you now have to do is to provide your customers with certain information, such as:
• The website address or e-mail address of the business.
• A description of the goods or services, so a person can decide whether it is what they need.
• Business’ physical address such as the pickup, return/drop off location. (It is also where letters and court documents can be sent).
• The total price of the goods or services (including transport costs, taxes, and other fees or costs).
• How to pay eg MOMO PAY, visa cards, cash on delivery, etc (Stop asking people to “DM for prices”)
• Term or conditions of the agreement (eg. When to return goods, exchange for other goods etc, any guarantees).
• Delivery Times: When do you deliver? (eg 8-5pm).
• How customers can access their online transaction receipts and records.
• The return, exchange, and refund policy of the business.
• security and privacy policy of the business. how the payment information and personal information such as home addresses
• and bank details of customers are kept. (Customers do not want to hear someone got their number from you).
