The Arua District LC V Chairman Hon Alfred Okuonzi, an ardent member of Rotary Club, who oriented young children on reading after 21-1-2023 Saturday's meeting with Rotary Club of Arua Eco City, said, there are many MPs and Councillors who can't stand up to debate during plenary sessions in Parliament and in various Council Halls in Uganda because of poor English.
Hon Okuonzi related their dilemma to poor reading culture, adding that, these are people who always hate to read.
Why would someone hate reading, the LC5 asked, as he urges the children to embrace "reading" if they want to pass well in schools and improve on their English grammar.
Hon Okuonzi said, they together with leaders from other Districts of WestNile region always have monthly District coordination committee meetings with Court officials which sits on every first Wednesday of every month to review all the proceedings of court.
While reading a charge seat of theft case written by a Police officer, the LC5 Chairman said, the officer wrote, "The thief stole white he goat 🐐 called boy", a narrative which made the people at the Saturday's meeting to burst into laughter.
The LC V Chairman said, it is embarrassing for a whole police officer to write such an awful English.
Upon quoting a proverb which says, "Show me a family of readers then i will show for you people who move the world", Hon Okuonzi averred on powers of reading, adding that, majority of a Country's population and World's population is ruled and suppressed by those with information and grammatical vocabulary, that is why people with poor English always endup abusing people during intellectual debates and discussions.
The LC V Chairman has appealed to all the parents in WestNile region and Uganda to embrace and motivate their children into reading culture.
The only way for you to mesearu to the standards of the contemporary world is only through reading, he lamented in his closing remarks.
