The horrific habit of stealing babies from hospitals is back. Here is what you need to know about it.
According to the Uganda Penal Code Act), anyone who takes or entices away any child under the age of 14 years with the intention of keeping such child permanently or for a long time is guilty of the offence of kidnapping. It is an even more serious crime to kidnap a child under the age of 14 with the intent to sell, trade, or exchange them for something else, such as forced labour or sexual exploitation. If found guilty of these crimes, a person can face imprisonment for up to life.
WHAT ABOUT THOSE STEALING BABIES FROM THE HOSPITAL?
Because babies (especially newborns) are very fragile and need specialised care, if a person is arrested for stealing such as a baby, they may be charged with Aggravated human trafficking because of the harm caused to that baby or what they may be planning to do with the baby.
So if you ever see someone trying to steal a baby from a hospital, or if you know of someone who has stolen a baby, report it to the police immediately! Not only is it illegal, but it is also incredibly dangerous for the child and could have life-long consequences. Remember, if you see something, say something!
