Police Ask for Cooperation Amongst Sister Security and Investigative Agencies in the Fight Against Corruption in Uganda.
During a Wednesday 30-11-2022 Anticorruption dialogue organized by Actionaid at Whitecastle Hotel Arua, WestNile region police spokesperson in consultation with her boss RPC and other commanders, have pleaded to other security organs to cooperate with police when investigating corruption related cases.
Below here is categorically what was submitted in the dialogue meeting, which was attended by IGG officials, PPDA, RDCs, Civil Society organizations and Politicians across WestNile Region.
1. Need for Statehouse Anti-corruption team to cooperate in sharing ideas and co-ordinate investigations with the area investigating organs like police who are on the ground, they may be having the gist of the information since they stay within the jurisdiction.
2. Need to trust and update the area investigating team on progress of the case, especially where the casefile originates from police. Many times they simply pick-up the files with suspects and fail to update the Investigating officers on progress of the case in question hence frustrating the effort of such officers on ground. Sometimes it's the suspects who update them with what happens to them at Anti-corruption unit while reporting on police bond before the area investigating officer.
3. If possible, the courts within the crime area be allowed to try corruption Cases to avoid unnecessary delays and save resources.
4. DPP should give more simplified directives to police to follow investigations. sometimes issues very complicated directives to police to follow which makes it hard for them to proceed with such a case up to logical conclusion. This may be the reason why police delays with such cases. Some cases end up being dismissed due to want of procecution.
5. CSOs and the general public should stop making verbal lamentations and allegations in public foras without reporting such corrupt practices and individuals to police and other investigating bodies for proper management. They should be able to support investigations with evidence up to logical conclusion. Verbal lamentations and allegations without reporting will not help to cub corruption.
