Eng Badru Kiggundu Condemns Domestic Violence Against Women, as He Commissions Multi-billion Water Project in Ovisoni, Arua District.
Former Electoral Commission boss who is now the incumbent National Water and Sewerage Cooperation (NWSC) board Chairperson, Eng Badru Kiggundu has on Friday 9-Dec-2022 commissioned a piped water project in Vurra Constituency , Arua District.
The project whose groundbreaking was done in 2019, has taken three years to get completed by National Water and Sewage Cooperation.
Hon Candini Luiji, the Councillor for Arivu Sub-county who is also the secretary for works and technical services in the District said, NWSC and Arua District are always working in collaboration and conducting regular meetings.
With safe water coverage in Arua District standing at 49.1%, He pointed at Arua - Bondo road, Dubai - Ajia road bordering Madi Okollo District and Arua - Vurra custom road as some of the areas in Arua District where NWSC has done tremendous work.
Hon Candini applauded NWSC for playing pivotal role in Arua District and WestNile region in their quest for access to safe water in the Country.
The District LC5 Chairman Hon Okuonzi Alfred said, despite the District's access to safe water standing at 49.1%, that is very low compared to the national target of 75%.
He uttered that, out of all the four Sub-counties in Arua District, it is Vurra Sub-county wich has the least coverage of access to safe water, a narrative the eloquent LC5 Chairman said it is caused by the high altitude of the Sub-county.
Hon Okuonzi appealed to NWSC to have some of the outstanding portions of areas in the District to be connected to safe water as soon as possible.
He mentioned Kawuanzeti health center IV, Eruba - Anzu - Opia raod, Nyio market and entire Logiri Sub-county as some of the facilities and areas in Arua District whose service deliveries have been affected because of no access to better safe water.
The LC5 Chairman also mentioned rising domestic violence as one of the challenges caused by lack of accessible safe water in the District, a statement he said, many women who go out to fetch water at times wait upto night hours and when they arrive home, some of their husbands turn chaotic and beat them for staying out at night in disguise of waiting to fetch water.
Hon Okuonzi in his closing remarks, praised Eng Badru Kiggundu and the entire NWSC officials in WestNile region and Uganda for the unity, professionalism and love they have continued to showcase.
The Deputy Resident District Commissoner for Arua District, Mr Ham Ezama said, one of their roles as RDCs is to mobilize people to embrace productive government programs and he therefore urged the community members to fill application forms so that they will be connected to safe piped water projects.
The Deputy RDC thanked President Museveni for his visionary leadership in steering this Country, something he said is the reason for all these developments taking place.
He also thanked the Chairperson for NWSC Eng Badru Kiggundu and the entire board members of NWSC for their hardwork, unity and love to serve the people of Uganda.
The Deputy Managing Director (Technical Services) for NWSC Eng Amayo Johnson pledged more water projects to be extended to the affected areas in Arua District.
Eng Amayo said, with the support of former minister and MP for Vurra Constituency Eng Ajedra Gabriel Aridru who brought some Koreans to do visibility study in the District which has helped them so much to come up with this project and many others in the other areas.
The Chairperson of NWSC, Eng Badru Kiggundu congratulated the government of Uganda under the able leadership of President Museveni for creating the enabling environment for all these services and development to flourish in WestNile region.
The board Chairperson Eng Kiggundu also thanked Deputy RDC Ezama Ham Mizamil, LC5 Chairman Hon Okuonzi Alfred, Arua District officials and NWSC management of WestNile region for being dedicated and loyal in their line of duty.
He promised more development for the people of WestNile region.
In his closing remarks, Eng Badru Kiggundu warned the Men in Arua District and WestNile to desist from beating their women over delays in the streams when fetching water.
Excited community members in Vurra Constituency, Arua District composed songs and poems for NWSC for their diligence in service delivery.
Chairperson of the Board, Eng Kiggundu, Deputy RDC Ham and Eng Amayo the Deputy managing director (technical services) for NWSC appreciated the 7 women who composed the song and poem, with a token of 210,000 Shs.
The women praised Badru Kiggundu, entire NWSC team and Arua District officials for coming to their rescue by launching this water project they have been yarning for over years.
Badru Kiggundu, NWSC management and Arua District officials planted fruit trees 🌳 to mark the commissioning memorable and named the trees according to their names and designations.
The function was closed with cake cutting and some small dance for joyful remembrance.
