Following Uganda’s constitutional court ruling on 5-May-2023 which repealed the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) 2015 which among others prohibited the sale and consumption of several narcotic drugs like Marungi, Opium and so on, the Parliament of Uganda is yet again intending to move a motion to re-table the law.
However, several politicians, activists and section of the public are rising to challenge the re-tabling of this law.
Philanthropic Mr Justus Yeero Aduma has shown up to be one of the Ugandans who are advocating to make sure Parliament does not table the narcotic law.
Through an opinion article, he based his defense on the concept of Marungi, which has not been scientifically proved to be a substance that is dangerous to Human health.
Mr Justsu who referenced Kenya, Somalia as a Hub for Marungi business said, Marungi has helped so many people from WestNile region in paying school fees of their children and creating wealth in families.
He appealed to the MPs not to be led by emotions while passing laws of this nature.
Below here is the Opinion letter by Mr Justus Yeero Aduma.
In many cases, our leaders tend to pass laws out of emotions and without proper benchmarking.
Marungi is one of the biggest cash crops in East Africa. Kenya for example earns huge sums of foreign exchange on daily basis through exportation of Miraa to Somalia.
Our economy remains dwarfed because we don’t do enough research before drafting some critical policies and laws.
My dear Members of Parliament, fight for socioeconomic needs of your people. Our people can actually benefit a lot from marungi growing and exportation.
We just need government support so that we can get more External markets for Marungi and enhance the livelihoods and welfare our people.
Kindly do not support this law that will criminalize the growth and consumption of Marungi
Aduma Yeero Justus.
