If you managed to watch the ‘latest’ Fast and Furious you probably saw those guys take a car into space. Kityo who works in Katwe also saw that movie and since then, he has been obsessed with trying out the same. He has been buying iron sheets and metals to create a rocket to take him to space. In fact, he has even promised those who will contribute some money that when he comes back, he will give them a chance to try it.
However, someone has told him that it might be illegal to just ‘fly’ to space just like that. Is this true?
WHAT DOES THE LAW SAY?
Yes, you need permission.
This is because the use of Uganda airspace is controlled by Civil Aviation Authority which controls how and when to use the airspace in Uganda without causing harm to anyone else using it. The Civil Aviation Authority also ensures safety of any aircraft by inspecting and approving this. Therefore, it is unlikely that Kityo’s car will be allowed to take to the Ugandan skies because it might be unsafe for those people around it. However, Kityo can ask for authorisation and allow his spaceship to be inspected so that he can attempt to launch it into space after getting the necessary approvals.
This is the World Space Week.
