Today is the International Sign Language Day and we would like to talk about a fair hearing and how it relates to your language.

A right to a fair hearing entitles you to the right to be notified (informed) of the charge being brought against you in a language you clearly understand? On top of this, you have a right to defend yourself by challenging those charges. You can do this in any language you can clearly understand, and your case should not be at a disadvantage just because you cannot use a spoken language.

Sign language is an internationally recognised language for those who are deaf and can also be used by anyone else who is comfortable using it. If you prefer to use sign language, or you only rely on sign language, you can challenge any criminal proceedings against you whether at police, in court for being unfair if they do not provide a competent sign language expert to translate what you are saying or to communicate what the authorities want.

The law says no one should be discriminated against on any grounds including being deaf or unable to speak.
