Yesterday, i convened a meeting with fellow leaders and farmers from the West Nile region and the Chief Coordinator of Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) Gen. Salim Saleh about reviving the cooperative unions in West Nile.
Cooperative unions are one of the key safeguards for smallholder farmers and since farming is the occupation where majority of Ugandans gain their source of livelihood, cooperatives are vital to the growth of the economy and ensuring food security.
Some of the the cooperatives whose restoration we discussed include; the West Nile Cooperative Union, the Central West Nile Cooperative Union, the Okoro coffee growers’ cooperative union, the cotton growing Madi cooperative union and South West Nile cooperative union.
Once up and running, co-operatives will help strengthen communities, the agricultural sector and the Ugandan economy as a whole and at the same time ensure that the farmers, who are usually at the bottom of the supply chain, have a voice, get basic services and prices they deserve.
