This morning, on behalf of the Vice President H.E. Edward Ssekandi, i attended the world egg day expo in Namboole.
The two day expo which was organized by the poultry association of Uganda is meant to draw special attention to the role eggs play in our lives.
It is a privilege as government to identify with the Poultry Association of Uganda as it organizes the different poultry stake holders in the industry to enable an efficient and robust poultry sub sector to grow.

Poultry has the potential of transforming lives of key stakeholders (majority of whom are women small holder farmers) by increasing household incomes.
It generates national revenues through export of eggs, poultry meat and day-old chicks to neighboring countries.

It also provides its value chain actors an opportunity to leverage the big market for its products and byproducts created by the growing population.

Eggs are highly nutritive poultry product that improves our sight, grows the brains of our children, helps the elderly to cut weight and provides all the necessary vitamins, amino acids and minerals for proper growth and yet is the most affordable protein for the majority of our people.
The Government of Uganda through its Ministry of Agriculture Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) has in the past lobbied for the uplifting of the ban of poultry exports to the neighboring countries through his excellency the president of the republic of Uganda. Work has been done on tax exemption on importation of poultry and hatchery equipment to enable increased productivity. Government has stopped cheap imports of poultry meat from other countries like Brazil to boost domestic production capacity.
The Ministry of Agriculture Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) is working on a livestock feed policy and bill which when completed will enable proper regulation of importation, manufacture, distribution and use of compounded livestock feeds, feed ingredients as well as supplements.
Work has been done on the poultry extension manual and guide with the help of USAID which will help to roll out the extension services throughout the country. Through Uganda development bank, access to affordable finances has been put in place for potential commercial farmers to engage in the poultry subsector. Through the National Agricultural research organization(NARO) ,Government has facilitated research in the poultry sector with special emphasis on trials of new Indian improved multipurpose breeds of poultry (Kroilers and rainbow ).These breeds are more resistant to diseases, grow faster than indigenous breeds and yet produce more eggs per cycle as compared to our local breeds.

The Availability of fertile soils, good weather and climate provides an opportunity to produce cheap raw materials for making feeds. The Existence of potential effective demand caused by high rate of urbanization and population growth in Uganda enables an increased domestic demand for poultry products. Uganda is strategically located in the Great Lakes region which is ideal for supplying the growing regional markets in Kenya, Tanzania, Southern Sudan, Congo and Rwanda. This coupled with affordable inputs, livestock feed and labor for poultry feed production with improved transport infrastructure: in form of upgraded road network and air transport gives Uganda a preferred investment destination for the poultry industry.
I trust that with the above government interventions the poultry sector will grow in lips and bounds to benefit the different stakeholders in their different capacities and above all government as the regulator of the sector. I urge investors to exploit these opportunities to cause a fundamental change in the poultry sub sector.
