Opiyo received land from his father’s brother who died without any child. He really wanted everyone to know that he is now a landowner since at their Sacco, everyone brings land titles to show their big achievement. So, he wants to know if there is a land title for his ‘new’ piece of land.
There are no land titles for customary land, however, the law allows the community members to apply for a document known as a Certificate of Customary Land Ownership (CCO) as documentary proof of ownership. This is not the same as a land title. You do not need a land title to be an owner. (We are going to cover the details on this certificate in tomorrow's post.)
For all the other forms of land ownership (such as Mailo, Leasehold and Freehold) you can register your interest so that you get a land title to show that you are the owner or have an interest in the land.
