Nigeria`s Opposition Leader Atiku Signs Elections Peace Pact.

Main opposition candidate of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar signed an election peace pact on Wednesday, saying a ‘communication lapse’ had prevented him from participating in the initial process with other candidates. Atiku, Donald Duke and Oby Ezekwesili, were some of the opposition candidates, who were notably absent at Tuesday’s ceremony in Abuja, at which President Muhammadu Buhari and dozens of other candidates vowed to ensure non-violence. Voters in Africa’s most populous nation go to the polls to elect a new president and parliament on February 16 next year. Gubernatorial and state assembly elections follow two weeks later. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said Abubakar was not at the event “due to (a) communication lapse between the National Peace Committee (NPC) and our party’s national secretariat”. But it added that both the party and Abubakar were “fully committed to a peaceful electoral process and elections in 2019”. At...

CAR war crimes suspect arrested in France, ICC awaits extradition.

French authorities have arrested a man suspected of committing war crimes in the Central African Republic and he will face extradition to The Hague, the International Criminal Court (ICC) said on Tuesday. Prosecutors say Patrice-Edouard Ngaissona was the “senior leader” of the Anti-Balaka militia that carried out systematic attacks on the country’s Muslim population in 2013-2014. Ngaissona, who denies wrongdoing, was elected in February to the executive committee of the Confederation of African Football despite objections from groups including Human Rights Watch. It named had him as a leader of the Anti-Balaka in a report in 2016. The ICC said Ngaissona was suspected of war crimes and crimes against humanity including murder, extermination, deportation, persecution, torture, attacking civilians, and recruiting child soldiers. A chamber at the court “found reasonable grounds to believe Mr. Ngaissona is liable for having committed jointly with others...

phpMyAdmin Releases Critical Software Update - Patch Your Sites Now.

Developers of phpMyAdmin, one of the most popular and widely used MySQL database management systems, on 1 December 2018, released an updated version 4.8.4 of its software to patch several important vulnerabilities that could eventually allow remote attackers to take control of the affected web servers. The phpMyAdmin project last Sunday gave an early heads up  about the latest security update through its blog, probably the first time, as an experiment to find if pre-announcements can help website admins, hosting providers and package managers better prepare for the security release. "We are inspired by the workflow of other projects (such as Mediawiki and others) which often announce any security release in advance to allow package maintainers and hosting providers to prepare. We are experimenting to see if such a workflow is suitable for our project," phpMyAdmin release manager Isaac Bennetch told The Hacker News. phpMyAdmin is a free, open-source administration tool for ...

Full List of Candidates in DRC Polls: 20 men, 1 woman aiming to replace Kabila.

Africa’s most eagerly awaited yet delayed elections is finally due to be held on December 23, 2018. All things being equal, the Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC, will experience its first democratic handover of executive power. Elections due for December 2016 were postponed with the elections body, CENI, citing the inability to put together a valid voters roll but also government’s talk of not having funds to organize the process. Incumbent and outgoing Joseph Kabila managed to stay for two-years after the expiration of his second constitutional term in office. DRC’s constitutional court had in 2016 ruled that he could stay in office till when next polls were held. CENI at a point had projected that the earliest polls could be held was in April 2019. Pressure from political actors at home and considerable international push meant Kinshasa had to slate a 2018 date even with the brave move that the entire process was going to be state-funded. Then the focus turned t...

Google+ to Shutdown Immediately After New API Flaw Hits 52.5 Million Users Again.

Google revealed on Monday 10 December 2018, that, Google+ has suffered another massive data breach, forcing the tech giant to shut down its struggling social network four months earlier than its actual scheduled date, i.e., in April 2019 instead of August 2019. Google said it discovered another critical security vulnerability in one of Google+'s People APIs that could have allowed developers to steal private information on 52.5 million users, including their name, email address, occupation, and age. The vulnerable API in question is called "People: get" that has been designed to let developers request basic information associated with a user profile. However, software update in November introduced the bug in the Google+ People API that allowed apps to view users' information even if a user profile was set to not-public. Google engineers discovered the security issue during standard testing procedures and addressed it within a week of the issue being introduced. T...

Kabila Rubbishes corruption claims against family, ready to handover.

The Democratic Republic of Congo’s outgoing president, Joseph Kabila, has rubbished claims that members of his family were unduly profiting from mining concessions in the country. He challenged those peddling such allegations to provide tangible evidence if they really had any. The most known such report is one published in 2016 by the Bloomberg news portal. “I probably believe that people who write those reports live on another planet which is not this planet. Feel free to give me the names of those family members and those permits, they don’t exist. That's where stupidity begins, allow me to use the word. I hope that one of these days someone will come up with something that is tangible instead of them being allegations left and right, Asked whether his wife and children were not holding mining rights, he responded: “Do you know how old my children are in order for them to have mining rights? “That’s where stupidity begins, allow me to use the ...

Prosecution agency of Rwanda has said it will appeal the recent acquittal of a government critic, Diane Rwigara and her mother Adeline Rwigara. The Rwanda New Times portal said prosecutor Jean Bosco Mutangana told reporters that the National Public Prosecution Authority, NPPA, was set to challenge the Kigali High court’s decision. The court last week acquitted the Rwigara’s who were facing charges of inciting violence and forgery on the part of Diane during the presentation of her candidature to contest presidential polls in 2017. The duo were acquitted with the court citing insufficient evidence on the part of the prosecution. This is the first time government is responding to the acquittal. The NPPA boss on Wednesday held a press conference with an aim of giving an update on the international cooperation on genocide fugitives. This follows the extradition Tuesday of Wenceslas Twagirayezu from Denmark. The 37-year-old opposition leader faced up to 22 years in prison fo...

Australia encryption telecommunications assistance bill Australia's House of Representatives has finally passed the "Telecommunications Assistance and Access Bill 2018," also known as the Anti-Encryption Bill, on Thursday that would now allow law enforcement to force Google, Facebook, WhatsApp, Signal, and other tech giants to help them access encrypted communications. The Australian government argues the new legislation is important for national security and an essential tool to help law enforcement and security agencies fight serious offenses such as crime, terrorist attacks, drug trafficking, smuggling, and sexual exploitation of children. Since the bill had support from both major parties (the Coalition and Labor), the upper house could vote in support of the Assistance and Access Bill to make it law, which is expected to come into effect immediately during the next...

Hold tight, this may blow your mind… A low-privileged user account on most Linux operating systems with UID value anything greater than 2147483647 can execute any systemctl command unauthorizedly—thanks to a newly discovered vulnerability. The reported vulnerability actually resides in PolicyKit (also known as polkit)—an application-level toolkit for Unix-like operating systems that defines policies, handles system-wide privileges and provides a way for non-privileged processes to communicate with privileged ones, such as "sudo," that does not grant root permission to an entire process. The issue, tracked as CVE-2018-19788, impacts PolicyKit version 0.115 which comes pre-installed on most popular Linux distributions, including Red Hat, Debian, Ubuntu, and CentOS. Rest In Peace, Fedora Linux 27.

Fedora may be the best overall desktop Linux operating system, but it lacks Ubuntu in one major area — support. You see, Canonical’s distribution has “Long Term Support” versions, some of which now have an insane 10 years of support. Fedora, by comparison, only offers support for one month following two subsequent major releases. This can vary based on delays, but it will probably average a bit more than a year. For instance, Fedora 27 was released November 14, 2017, and Fedora 29 was released on October 30, 2018. This means as of today, November 30, Fedora 27 has reached end of life mere weeks after its one-year anniversary. inRead invented by Teads “At this point, packages in the Fedora 27 repositories no longer receive security, bugfix, or enhancement updates. Furthermore, the community adds no new packages to the Fedora 27 collection starting at End of Life. Essentially, the Fedora 27 release will not change again, meaning users no longer receive the...

DRC confirms `serious` threat against U.S. embassy.

Congolese authorities have confirmed that a security threat against U.S. government facilities that has kept the U.S. embassy closed all week is real and serious. The U.S. embassy in the capital, Kinshasa, has been closed since last weekend due to what it says is “credible and specific information of a possible terrorist threat”. It has declined to elaborate. Earlier in the week, Democratic Republic of Congo’s government spokesman said U.S. officials were keeping the government in the dark and questioned whether the threat was an “imaginary alert”. It’s clear these threats are serious. The U.S. and our services have serious information regarding the validity of the threat. But in a news conference on Friday, Foreign Minister Leonard She Okitundu, who met with U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Elizabeth Fitzsimmons on Wednesday, said the threat was real. “It’s clear these threats are serious. The U.S. and our services have serious in...
