Beware! Playing Untrusted Videos On VLC Player Could Hack Your Computer.

If you use VLC media player on your computer and haven't updated it recently, don't you even dare to play any untrusted, randomly downloaded video file on it. Doing so could allow hackers to remotely take full control over your computer system. That's because VLC media player software versions prior to 3.0.7 contain two high-risk security vulnerabilities, besides many other medium- and low-severity security flaws, that could potentially lead to arbitrary code execution attacks. With more than 3 billion downloads, VLC is a hugely popular open-source media player software that is currently being used by hundreds of millions of users worldwide on all major platforms, including Windows, macOS, Linux, as well as Android and iOS mobile platforms. Discovered by Symeon Paraschoudis from Pen Test Partners and identified as CVE-2019-12874, the first high-severity vulnerability is a double-free issue which resides in "zlib_decompress_extra" function of VideoLA...

Jean Pierre Bemba returns to Democratic Republic of Congo.

Congolese opposition figure and former warlord Jean-Pierre Bemba arrived discreetly in Kinshasa on Sunday morning for his second return to the Democratic Republic of Congo in less than a year after being convicted and acquitted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) and serving ten years in prison. Upon his descent from a private jet from Brussels, Mr. Bemba was welcomed by Martin Fayulu, who claims victory in the June 30 presidential election won by Felix Tshisekedi according to the official results of the Electoral Commission validated by the Constitutional Court. Near the airport, the crowd was very small compared to the thousands of people who greeted his first return from exile on August 1 after eleven years of absence. I look forward to meeting you again so that together we can strengthen unity of vision and action for a prosperous Congo. Mr. Bemba had only stayed in the DRC for a few days to stand as a candidate in the presidential election, which was finally...

Russia Plans to Block Major VPNs as Next Step in Closing Up Internet.

Great Firewall of Russia. Russia is getting closer to implementing the sort of internet regulations that exist under the Great Firewall of China. Earlier this year, internet providers began preparing to conduct tests to find out if Russia can build an internet disconnected from the rest of the world. Now, Russia plans to block major VPN (virtual private network) services that allow users to reach banned websites. In March, Russia’s telecommunications regulations agency Roscomnadzor told the top VPN providers to link their servers to the government-run IT system, which it uses to prevent people in the country from accessing banned sites. Roskomnadzor wrote to the ten providers—ExpressVPN, HideMyAss!, Hola VPN, IPVanish, Kaspersky Secure Connection, KeepSolid, NordVPN, OpenVPN, TorGuard, and VyprVPN—and said the operations had 30 days to respond, according to a Reuters report at the time. “In the cases of non-compliance with the obligations stipulated by the law, Roskomnadzor ma...

Facebook Shareholder Revolt Gets Bloody: Powerless Investors Vote Overwhelmingly to Oust Mark Zuckerberg as chairman.

Independent Facebook investors voted overwhelmingly in support of proposals to fire Mark Zuckerberg as chairman and scrap the firm's share structure. According to the results of votes at Facebook's annual shareholder meeting last week, 68% of outside investors want the company to hire an independent chairman. The majority was up from 51% last year. Despite the revolt, the proposals did not pass because of Zuckerberg's voting control of the stock, which means he can swat away shareholder demands. "Arrogance is not a substitute for good corporate governance," said Michael Connor, who helped coordinate action among activist Facebook investors. In a filing on Monday, Facebook revealed how investors voted on a raft of proposals at its annual shareholder meeting last week — and the results underline the unrest among outside investors. According to an analysis of the results by Open Mic — an organization that works with activist shareholders to improve corporate...
